Mathematics Research

Research is an integral component of the mathematics program and students have many opportunities to conduct original research and attend summer research programs. Participating in research gives students the opportunity to work collaboratively to solve problems, develop research questions and make presentations.

Recent thesis presentations by math majors include:

  • “A Study of Fractal Geometry with an Application to the Economy”
  • “Introduction to Cryptography: Exploring the NTRUEncrypt Algorithm”
  • “Modeling the Dynamics of Corporate Credit Ratings: Estimating Ratings Transitions”
  • “Modeling the Dynamics of Corporate Credit Ratings: Creating a Predictive Ratings Model”
  • “Colored Points in the Plane, Polytopes and the Gale Transform”

Recent summer research programs attended by math majors include:

  • Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Mathematics: Modeling and Industrial Applied Mathematics, N.C. State University
  • Undergraduate Modeling Workshop, Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute
  • Summer Institute for Training in Biostatistics, University of Pittsburgh
  • Summer Institute for Training in Biostatistics, N.C. State University
  • The National Cancer Institute’s Integrative Cancer Biology Program, 2010 Summer Cancer Research Fellowship Program, The Ohio State University
