Meredith College Hosts COM Week 2018

Meredith College hosted  Communication (COM) Week February 19-23, in which the communication department partnered with the Office of Career Planning to host a variety of events to celebrate the major and its students.

The weeklong event began with a Lunch and Learn on Emotional Intelligence and Success in the Workplace presented by Dr. Korrel Kanoy, co-author of The Student EQ Edge: Facilitation and Activity Guide, on Monday. The discussion focused on how emotional intelligence is a key aspect of a student’s development and the likelihood of their success in the workplace.

Anne McCarthy, president of Westmeath Global Communications, headlined an “Evening of Etiquette” that night, which was held in Belk Dining Hall West. It was co-sponsored by the Parents Council with additional support from the history department.

On Wednesday, the Department of Communication sponsored a chapel session that featured a video conference with Holocaust survivor Eva Kor titled “Surviving the Angel of Death: A Forgiveness Story.” Kor, a surviving twin, told her story of survival and how she had found peace and joy in forgiveness, encouraging students to do the same.

The Office of Career Planning also held its annual Spring Career Fair in conjunction with the Eastern North Carolina Career Alliance (ENCCA) at North Carolina State University’s McKimmon Center.

COM Week concluded on Thursday with the Lambda Pi Eta Honor Society induction ceremony. New members gathered in Harris 214 with friends and family, along with several communication professors. The purpose of Lambda Pi Eta is to promote and encourage professional development among communication majors, to provide an opportunity to discuss and exchange ideas in the field of communication, and to establish and maintain closer relationships and mutual understanding between communication faculty and students.

“Having communication week is one of the ways we celebrate the major and our students,” Teresa Holder, head of the department of communication, said. “This year we inducted 27 new members into our Lambda Pi Eta honor society to recognize those who have excelled academically.”

The ceremony included an introduction from the chapter president, a keynote speaker, and followed with the presentation of cords and certificates to new members. Among the new members was Meagan Korovich, ’19. Korovich was honored to receive the invitation to be inducted into the Lambda Pi Eta chapter at Meredith.

“Being a part of the communication honor society is not only tangible evidence that hard work actually pays off, but it is motivation to keep going strong at Meredith,” said Korovich. “Knowing that I am among the top 30% of my class and a member of such a prestigious organization is a great feeling.”

Meredith’s Department of Communication offers concentrations in interpersonal communication, mass communication, and public relations.
