Faculty Selected for 2018-19 Sabbaticals

The Meredith College Board of Trustees has approved the sabbaticals for the following faculty members.

Fall 2018

  • Associate Professor of Biology Jason Andrus will focus on the microbiomes of wildlife habitats during his sabbatical. He will train at the UNC School of Medicine on using the Illumina MiSeq platform.
  • Associate Professor of Human Environmental Sciences Eunyoung Yang will research, create, discuss, and exhibit a new body of work that will incorporate slow fashion concepts through sustainable surface design techniques. Slow fashion represents eco, ethical, green fashion into a unified movement that produces goods using organic fibers, cultural sensitivity and regional authenticity.

Spring 2019

  • Associate Professor of History Dan Fountain will study slavery in the piedmont of North Carolina during the mid-nineteenth century, building on previous work on Piedmont slaveholding families to explore the politics of slavery in Wake, Alamance, and Orange counties. He will also analyze slave narratives for aspects of everyday life.
  • Professor of Mathematics Jennifer Hontz will develop a mathematics topics course in graph theory and formulate research ideas for undergraduate students in graph theory and cryptology.
  • Professor of Education Jennifer Olson’s project, writing a young adult historical fiction novel set in Sansepolcro, Italy, will bring together her expertise in children’s literature and her interest in the connection between teaching, reading, and writing in K-12 classrooms.
