Annual English Week at Meredith College a Success

After a week filled with literature and theatre to promote the English community, Meredith College’s annual English Week, Oct. 16-20, proved to be a success.

English Week kicked off with Lit Live, an event where faculty members or students could read their own creative work. A student and faculty audience gathered on the second floor of the Cate Center for an hour filled with readings.

On Tuesday, the American Shakespeare Center (ASC) performed Taming of the Shrew. This comedic performance kept the audience laughing throughout the show and presented Shakespeare in an understandable way. Afterwards, several cast members participated in a talkback with the audience.

English Department Chair Laura Fine said, “English Week was a great success. Students came out in numbers to all the events and got the special treat of seeing the American Shakespeare Company perform on their own campus.”

On Wednesday, ASC conducted theatre workshops for Meredith students before putting on an evening production of Sense and Sensibility in honor of the 200th anniversary of Jane Austen’s death. This performance showcased Emma Whipday’s adaptation of Austen’s classic novel.

Thursday was Declare Your Major Day, which led into the English alumnae panel on Friday. KeAnne Hoeg, ’99, Christina Holder, ’02, Virginia Claire Tharrington, ’10, and Sarah Taylor, ’15, were English alumnae in attendance with careers in market research, journalism, law, and teaching. The panel shared their stories, discussed the advantages of being an English major, and gave advice to current students.

“I think this English Week was one of the best yet, particularly in its involvement of more students outside of the major,” said Emily Chilton, ’18, a double major in English and history. “Because of the ASC performances, more students were able to participate in English-related events. The events gave opportunities for those newer or incoming majors to meet others and feel even more connected to a community within Meredith.”
