Gaining Connections in Communication – Sabrina Brown

Through her close relationships with faculty and staff and a high level of involvement on campus, Sabrina Brown, ’17, has developed academically and professionally.

After graduation, Sabrina plans to gain work experience before getting her MBA in international marketing. She recently accepted a position at MetLife starting after graduation.

Sabrina grew up in Connecticut where she planned to attend a large public university. After attending an “Experience Meredith” event and talking to current students and faculty, she felt a sense of community on Meredith’s campus that appealed to her.

“I didn’t expect to find so much worth in small class sizes and the professors’ open door policies,” said Sabrina. “Professors know my name, they know my goals, and they have seen me grow over the years.”

Sabrina is majoring in communication with minors in marketing and psychology. She is involved in several clubs and organizations, and holds leadership positions. Sabrina is president of Lambda Pi Eta Honor Society, vice president of the Communication Club, a study abroad ambassador, and she works in the Office of International Programs.

“Leadership roles really allowed me to get to know students and faculty on campus and build those relationships. It’s given me a clear focus on what I want to do and what I want to be,” said Sabrina.

One important experience Sabrina had while at Meredith was studying abroad in Italy for the fall semester of 2014. “Studying abroad in Italy was life changing,” Sabrina said. “I was able to transition from an introvert to being able to jump out of my comfort zone. I came back more confident. This wouldn’t have been possible without the great study abroad programs here at Meredith.”

The faculty and staff at Meredith have really supported Sabrina throughout her four years. Her communication professors have helped her develop a clear view of what options she will have with a degree in communication. They have encouraged her to gain that knowledge, as well as make connections in the industry. Jane Matthews, assistant director of employee relations, and others in the Office of Career Planning have been a great resource for her in figuring out what to do next.

“Through the support and resources Meredith offers in both personal and professional development, I’ve become very confident and have been able to experience new things and find my strengths.”
