On Tuesday, March 27, 2018, Meredith will host a panel discussion with six women police chiefs. These community leaders will talk about what it’s like to serve as police chiefs, challenges they have faced, and the future of women in law enforcement leadership.

The panel will take place from 5-6:30 p.m. in Carswell Auditorium on Meredith’s campus. Six police chiefs will participate in the discussion:

  • Chief Cassandra Deck-Brown, Raleigh, N.C.
  • Chief C.J. Davis, Durham, N.C.
  • Chief Catrina A. Thompson, Winston-Salem, N.C.
  • Chief Laura Fahnestock, Fuquay-Varina, N.C.
  • Chief Winifred Bowens, Littleton, N.C.
  • Chief Patrice Andrews, Morrisville, N.C.

The panel is sponsored by Meredith College’s Sociology and Criminology Department. One of the largest women’s colleges in the nation, Meredith prepares women to work in a range of fields, including traditionally male-oriented careers. As part of that effort, the College makes a point of introducing students to women role models who can share from their own experiences. The criminology program at Meredith regularly invites professionals to visit campus, particularly through its annual Criminology Week. The College also has a strong internship program with the Raleigh police department and other area organizations.

The panel is also sponsored by local chapters of ASIS Chapter 119 Women in Security (WIS).

The Celebrating Women in Law Enforcement event is free and open to the public. For Meredith students, this panel qualifies as an academic/cultural event in General Education.
