DUAL DEGREE ENGINEERING
at Meredith College

Through the dual degree engineering program at Meredith, you can combine a well-rounded liberal arts education at a women’s college with one of the most respected engineering schools in the country.

“This experience is so unique and I really cherish the fact that Meredith enables me to bring all of my passions together.”

Our Dual Engineering Degree

The dual degree engineering program is an agreement between Meredith and North Carolina State University where you will simultaneously complete the academic requirements of both institutions. Students must meet the program eligibility requirements. Once graduating from the five-year program, you will earn two degrees – one from each institution.

In this program, you will develop your leadership and communication skills by deepening your knowledge through internships and guidance from professional mentors. As a graduate of this program, you will be qualified to take on the distinctive challenges engineers face in today’s global society.

Meredith’s commitment to educating, supporting, and promoting women as leaders in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics will give you the strength to make an impact in the professional field. Our dual degree engineering program offers three different tracks.

Why Study Engineering at Meredith?

  • Engineering students earn two degrees in five years, making them strong candidates for leadership positions within the professional field.
  • Through hands-on experiences, students will gain the creative, communication, teamwork, and leadership skills that are highly sought after by employers.
  • Examples of internships completed by students include
    • NASA Kennedy Space Center
    • NC Department of Transportation (DOT)-Congestion Management Section through the Entrepreneurial Training Women and Girls Program with U.S. DOT
    • Department of Biological and Agricultural Engineering at North Carolina State University
  • Access to 13 dedicated research labs housed in Meredith’s Science and Mathematics Building (SMB), which contains 80,000 square feet of learning space.
  • The Hazel Lee Gaddis Engineering Scholarship is exclusive to Meredith’s dual degree engineering program.
  • Graduates emerge from the program uniquely qualified to take on the distinctive challenges engineers face in today’s global society.
    • Examples of student success in Meredith’s dual engineering degree program include Carlee Joseph, ’19, who completed internships through the Department of Defense (DOD) Pathways Program and the Naval Air Systems Command (NAVAIR) as an engineering intern supporting full-time engineers and gaining experience in the life cycle support of naval aircrafts, including research, repair, design, test, and evaluation. She now works as a manufacturing engineer at GE Aviation.

Learn By Doing

As a first-year dual-engineering major at Meredith, students gain valuable experience through a class working on a stripped-down electric car. The practical knowledge, essential problem-solving skills, and connections gained during this class prepare engineering students to succeed as they move into more challenging courses.

E-Car Quick Facts

  • Top Speed about 40 MPH
  • 50 mile range
  • Six 12-Volt lead acid batteries
  • BEV: a battery electric vehicle that runs 100% on electricity
  • Used for IDS-111 (Engineering Challenges and Ethics) and undergraduate research projects

Careers in Engineering

If you’re a creative and innovative individual interested in design and development, then pursuing a degree in engineering may be the best course of action for you. The field of engineering is vast, so you’ll be sure to find the career that best suits you.

Meredith’s dual engineering degree program equips you with real-world experience and a solid foundation of knowledge. Careers our graduates have pursued include

  • Chemical engineering
  • Environmental engineering
  • Civil engineering
  • Computer engineering
  • Electrical engineering
  • Industrial engineering
  • Aerospace engineering

Dual Degree Engineering student Aly Henneberry, combined her math degree at Meredith and a mechanical engineering degree from NC State with her love of tennis.

  • Potential jobs for graduates with a chemistry focus: Manufacturing production technician, chemical plant and system operator, analytical chemist, food engineer, pharmaceutical manufacturer, chemical engineer, environmental engineer, nuclear engineer
  • The average salary for a chemical engineer in the U.S. is $105,550 per year.
  • Potential jobs for graduates with a mathematics focus: software engineer, systems analyst, database manager, financial analyst, risk analyst, data scientist
  • The average salary for a mathematical engineer in the U.S. is $99,249 per year.
  • Potential jobs for graduates with a computer science focus: software developer, web developer, UX designer, mobile app developer, IT project manager, AI engineer, video game developer
  • The average national salary varies by specific job role, but the average salary in the U.S. for a general computer scientist is $104,610 per year.

As a dual degree engineering student and an award-winning student-athlete, Carlee Joseph, ’19, has learned to balance her time while still finding ways to get involved on campus and in her community.

As a dual degree engineering student Shanzila Chowdhury, ’19, describes her Meredith journey as one of persistence and determination – and it has paid off. Post-graduation, Shanzila accepted a full-time position as an electrical engineer.

Dual Degree Engineering News

Students in Meredith’s Dual Degree Engineering program participated in the First-Year Engineering Design Day (FEDD) at NC State at the end of the 2021-22 academic year. FEDD is an opportunity for first-year engineering student teams to showcase their design projects.

Meredith STEM College is an opportunity for rising 10th, 11th, and 12th-grade women to develop their interest in science.

If you are selected for the program you will participate in six in-person weekend workshops as well as a two-week residential, simulated biomedical summer experience on Meredith’s campus. You’ll also earn three college credit hours.
