As an economics major, you will learn how to solve problems in business and society. Meredith’s program focuses on the practical applications of economics to everyday situations and dilemmas and offers a high degree of flexibility.

Our Bachelor’s in Economics

Through the economics major, you will gain a solid foundation in economic theory and principles, and develop the analytical skills necessary to apply, understand, and test those theories and principles in practice. 

Upon graduating, students will be well-equipped to pursue meaningful careers right out of college and be prepared for graduate school. At Meredith, students can customize their program in a way that maximizes their success, such as adding a second major. 

Economics Programs

The Bachelor of Arts in Economics requires students to complete 30-33 credit hours, including 18 credit hours of core courses and 12 credit hours of economics electives. 

Additionally, students are required to submit a portfolio in economics to complete the major.

Students minoring in Economics are required to complete 18 credit hours, including 9 credit hours of core courses and 9 credit hours of electives.

What Can I Do With a Degree in Economics?

The School of Business has a required internship program, giving economics majors the opportunity to gain hands-on training by completing economics internships with leading businesses, government agencies, and non-profit organizations.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median pay for graduates with a business degree is $69,000.

Presidential Scholar Carol Jablonski, ’20, took advantage of opportunities early on at Meredith, allowing her to land a job at MetLife Global Technology months before graduation.

As a Meredith student, Victoria Kinney, ’18, set goals and achieved them, landing a position at SAS, one of the world’s leading employers, even before completing her degree.

Economics News and Events

Two Meredith College teams participated in DataFest at NC State this spring, with both teams earning awards. DataFest is an event sponsored by the American Statistical Association and held at schools around the country each spring. The event lasts from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon, while undergraduate teams compete to explore and analyze a secret data set provided by an anonymous client. Teams share insights in a brief presentation at the end of the event. 

In the 2022-23 Faculty Distinguished Lecture, Professor of Finance Bing Yu presented “Impact Investing: Driving Capitalists to Do Good While Doing Well.” The lecture was held on Thursday, October 13, 2022, at 7 p.m., in Jones Auditorium.
