Meredith Abroad: Medicinal Chemistry in Italy (Course & Spring Break Abroad)

March 12 - March 22
Four Meredith students in Italy.

This program offers an intensive and immersive exploration of drug discovery, natural products, and pharmaceutical science in one of Italy’s most historic regions. Based in Sansepolcro with  visits to Anghiari and Florence, you will explore sites that trace the evolution of medicinal chemistry from Renaissance apothecaries to modern labs while exploring the foundations and frontiers of medicinal chemistry. Visits to historic pharmacies and hospitals, botanical gardens, and a natural pharmaceutical company offer a unique blend of science and culture. This program emphasizes the uses and development of medicine and introduces European pharmaceutical practices. You will also enjoy cultural experiences such as engaging with locals within and outside of the medicinal field, touring museums, and sampling local cuisine, in order to gain a deeper appreciation for the intersection of chemistry, history, and society. After our travel abroad, we will continue meeting as a group for the remainder of the semester. The program will add three credits to your spring 2026 course load.
