Meredith Abroad: Art, Culture, & Landscape in New Mexico (Spring Course & Abroad)

May 14 - May 25
Georgia O'Keefe in New Mexico with a painting.

This program highlights the rich intersection of art, nature, and culture in New Mexico. This region has a storied history of intermingling cultures such as Indigenous Pueblo, Navajo/Dine, Mexican, Spanish Colonists, and Anglo American, which will offer a unique cultural experience for students. With a focus on Indigenous and contemporary art, students will explore this region through cultural site visits, weaving, and a dedicated sketchbook practice. The curriculum also includes an exploration of Georgia O’Keeffe’s life and work, examining how the region’s striking landscapes and cultural history profoundly influenced her artistic vision. Visits to museums, cultural institutions, and national parks in and around Albuquerque, Santa Fe, Taos, and Abiquiu/Ghost Ranch will offer students opportunities to experience both ancient and contemporary works first hand. The program will also highlight the art traditions of Indigenous communities, including (but not limited to) the Navajo, Zuni, and Hopi, with a focus on their use of natural materials and techniques that reflect a deep relationship with the land. In addition to the 11-day program in New Mexico, students will participate in a three credit course during the spring 2026 semester. This course is mandatory and meets on Friday afternoons/evenings. The program will add three credits to your spring 2026 course load.
