COMPANY was originally produced in 1970 with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by George Furth. At the time it was nominated for a record-setting fourteen Tony awards and won six. It has enjoyed several revivals in both New York and London in the past 49 years.
Originally titled THREES, its plot revolves around Bobbie (a single person unable to commit fully to a steady relationship, let alone marriage), the five married couples who are her best friends, and three characters who are her love interest. Unlike most musicals which follow a clearly delineated plot, COMPANY is a concept musical composed of short vignettes, presented in no particular chronological order, linked by a celebration for Bobbie's birthday party.
COMPANY was among the first musicals to deal with adult themes and relationships. As London-based critic Matt Wolf phrased it in the New York Times last year, "At last, COMPANY has a human pulse and a proper dramatic core. And for that to happen, it took a woman."
