The theme of this exhibition is the Meredith Hues Iris as an iconic symbol of Meredith and as a perennial flower~ continual, lifelong and abiding. The iris is mentioned as the Meredith College flower as early as 1904 and the Meredith Hues Iris was recognized as the official flower of the college in 1997. In 1968, Meredith College alumna Loleta Kenan Powell, class of 1941, developed and registered an iris hybrid she named Meredith Hues.
Exhibiting artists spanning over the past 4 decades have taken creative liberties with the form, symbolism and conceptual narrative of the iris as it relates to their own work and media of choice.
This exhibition runs from January 29- March 11, 2018, in Weems Gallery Gaddy-Hamrick Art Center.
A reception will be held on Tuesday, February 27, 2018, from 5:30-7:30 p.m., featuring an artist introduction and gallery talk at 6:15 p.m.
