Tips for Students Considering Transferring to a New College

There are many reasons you may be considering transferring to a new college. Maybe you’re looking for a new environment or a different academic program, or you’re ready to transfer from a community college. Whatever the reason, you’re likely wondering how to find a college that best suits your needs. In today’s blog, we provide three tips to help your college search process.

Determine Your Academic Goals

The first step is determining what you want the rest of your college experience to look like. There are many questions to ask yourself to form a clearer picture of your goals and expectations including

  • What do I want to study?
  • Do I want to conduct undergraduate research?
  • What is my ideal timeline for completing my degree?
  • Do I want to study abroad?
  • What skills do I want to develop?
  • Do I want to build close relationships with faculty?

The right institution will align with your values and help you accomplish your goals so it’s important to take some time to think about what you want.

Research Colleges and Universities

Once you identify your goals and expectations, use those as criteria for narrowing down colleges and universities. There are several online resources, such as College Board and Niche, to research colleges and universities. You can customize the search by location, academic programs, and more to find colleges that match your criteria.

Exploring a college’s website and following them on social media is also a great way to learn more information and see what the campus culture is like.

Visit and Connect with the Campus

Once you have narrowed down a list of colleges and universities, the best way to determine if they truly are a good fit is to visit campus and speak with faculty, staff, and students. This will give you a better insight into the resources, support, and opportunities offered. And, if you feel welcomed and supported during your visit, you will likely have that same feeling as a student.

At Meredith, we offer individual campus visits and transfer information sessions. At these events, you will tour our beautiful campus, meet with your admissions and financial aid counselors, and learn more about how Meredith will help you complete your degree.
