For high school seniors going through the college search process, you may find that it can cause stress and anxiety. After all, you are navigating a new and complex process while balancing other responsibilities like schoolwork and extracurriculars. It’s completely understandable to feel overwhelmed. In today’s blog, we share a few tips to manage stress and approach the college search process more efficiently.

Narrow Down Your List of Colleges and Universities

There is an abundance of colleges and universities in the U.S. With so many options, it can feel daunting to start the process. Narrowing down a list to a handful of colleges and universities can help focus your efforts on a smaller amount of applications.

Think about what characteristics you are looking for in a college. What type of environment would help you thrive as a student? Do you prefer a small or large college? A rural or urban location? What academic programs interest you? Other important factors to consider are campus culture, class sizes, and extracurricular opportunities like internships and student research.

Once you have determined what is important to you, identify colleges and universities which match your criteria. From there, you will be able to narrow down your list.

Visit Campuses

Once you have narrowed down your list, schedule a campus visit to as many colleges on your list as possible. Visiting a campus is the best way to get a real feel for a college and determine if it is the right fit for you.

At Meredith, we offer a variety of visit options including individual visits and open houses. At our visit events, you’ll have the opportunity to speak with faculty, staff, and current students. You’ll also learn more about the application process, financial aid, and scholarships.

Stay Organized

Each college or university will have unique application requirements and deadlines. Once you’ve narrowed down which colleges to apply to, make a to-do list for each application and jot down any deadlines in your calendar. This will help you stay on track and focused.

Connect with Admissions Teams

If you have any questions or concerns, reach out to the admissions offices at the college you are applying to. They’re there to help! An admissions team can provide valuable information and answer any of your questions. It can also give you insight into the type and level of support a college provides.
