“I use what I learned from my degree every single day, whether it is in my work, within my relationships, how I view the world, or how I interact with others. I think it really opens your eyes up to the inequalities of the world, and some of the justices of the world. I learned so much from this degree, much more than I ever anticipated.”

                                        ~Tiffany Stokes, Graduate of 2007

The Women's Studies program at Meredith College embraces Meredith's commitment to women's leadership. In our courses women are placed at the center of academic exploration and students are encouraged to examine the social influences which shape their identities, opportunities and hopes.  Using an interdisciplinary approach the Women’s Studies Program explores the importance of gender in the labor market, the family, political systems and in popular culture. The study of Women is joined to an understanding of the forms of activism around the globe.

The Women's Studies program recognizes that gender is never lived alone. Instead the program exploreshow gender is socially constructed through complex interactions with sexuality, class, race and ethnicity, as well as national and regional identity. This examination requires inquiry into the construction and operation of power relations, social inequalities, and resistances to them in both national and transnational contexts.

What are the challenges that women still face in the United States?  How are women’s rights respected in other parts of the world?  How have contributions of women helped to create a more just, equitable and caring society?  Women’s Studies will encourage you to reflect on your own life; become more critically aware of our global society; and develop your knowledge and skills for making personal and social changes.

The major/minor provides students with knowledge and skills which can be applied in a variety of professional fields.  It can be utilized as a major, double major, or taken as courses to supplement another major.  Thanks for visiting our website.  Please feel free to contact us.
