Journals from Sri Lanka - Rebecca Thompson

Entry1 : July 11
Today was our first day at the Pelena school, and it was quite an education. We new that it would be a cultural experience, but no one was prepared for the rush of excitement and confusion that greeted us as we walked through the back gates. We aren't quite sure if the school is always in such a state of chaos or if it was just the arrival of nine Meredith students that caused such an uproar. We do make quite an impression wherever we go. We walked into the school "prepared" for anything, but fortunately most of us just observed some of the classrooms. For the rest of the week we will be divided into three groups to assist the three English teachers. A few days we might even be the English teachers. The teacher I have been paired with is very funny, and I think I'm going to have a wonderful week as long as I don't lose my voice. The school grounds are very noisy and full of life because students are constantly running around, and a two story building is being constructed. It's wonderful to see that the school is rebuilding since the tsunami, and I am very fortunate to be a part of the Meredith community that has helped the people of Sri Lanka rebuild their lives.
