Journals from Santiago de Compestela, Spain

Seven Meredith College students who are studying abroad in Spain this summer were part of a group of international students featured in El Correo Gallego, the main newspaper of Santiago de Compostela.Eight Meredith students will study in Santiago de Compostela, Spain, this summer. Professor of Foreign Languages and Literatures Mary Thomas is the program leader for this group. The students are in Spain from June 23 to July 19.

Santiago is a small city in the northwest part of Spain. It was the final destination of the medieval Pilgrims' Way (Camino de Santiago). As a medieval center of cultural, artistic, and commercial exchange, Santiago has preserved for centuries its rich legacy in its churches and architecture, in its streets and squares and even in its lifestyle.

All students in the Meredith program will stay with local families near the university in order to learn more about Spanish culture.

The program features three intensive language courses held at the University of Santiago, at beginning, intermediate or advanced levels. Beginning and intermediate language courses include hands-on language learning techniques presented through workshops about life in Spain, taking place at various cultural settings. Advanced students will have Spanish language instruction and seminars related to socio-economic and political life in Spain, as well as its art and folklore.
