Some of the things I learned about Costa Rica's concerns over water include pollution from ineffective septic systems and the use of hydroelectric power. With the advance of technology and the pressure to modernize, Costa Rica had run into the problem of providing sufficient energy and providing sustainable energy. Upgrading the country's sewage system would be very expensive, but would help maintain the aquifers. Hydroelectric power is sustainable but can disturb the natural water cycles.
North Carolina has issues with its energy source and water pollution, as well. North Carolina's main source of energy is coal, and the practice of mountaintop removal/valley fill buries streams with debris and pollutes water systems. This is also going on in several states in the country, so the EPA is reviewing the cases. There were also several pieces of legislation that were brought up in North Carolina about preventing the beach from being concreted over, and another to help protect the quality of the drinking water.
I suppose countries all over the world are facing the same kinds of problems.
