Entry 2: 5/28/11

Today was so amazing. We got to go to Montverde and go zip-lining through the cloud forest. It was so exhilarating. We did a total of 13 cables and each one was better than the last. I love doing things that give you an adrenaline rush and today definitely was an adrenaline rush. On the longer cables we had to go in pairs or else we would not have enough momentum make it across to the other platform. The longer ones were my favorite. When you went down the cable you got such an amazing view of the canopy. It was all open and we were up above the trees and it was really cool. It felt like you were just gliding through the treetops.

The hikes were a little bit strenuous but they were totally worth it in order to get to the zip-lining. The Tarzan swing was also amazing. The first step was the hardest because you had to just jump off the platform and drop down. After the first jump it was really nice to swing back and forth between the trees. Today was very exciting and I loved all of the fun things that we did.

Hike Through la Selva

Today’s hike through la Selva was very interesting. I learned a lot about all of the different species that are in la Selva and in Costa Rica in general. The poison dart frog really stood out to me. This frog was as small as your finger nail and it was so colorful but it could kill a predator. Also the poison dart frogs lay infertile eggs and then they eat them. This was strange to me; it would be like a chicken eating their infertile eggs. It just does not seem natural. I wonder if they gain nutrients from eating those eggs. I also liked learning about the Howler monkey. These monkeys will kill other females’ offspring so that their own young will not have competition when they grow up. I wonder what else we will learn about these monkeys and the other types of monkeys there are in Costa Rica. I hope we learn more about these in Calbo Blanco. Pura Vida!
