Plastic recycling nearly doubled in one year

The 2009 September plastic recycling rate on campus (1640 pounds) is significantly higher than plastic collection at this time last year (September 2008, 950 pounds).

Effective 1 October 2009, plastic bottles are banned from landfill disposal by the NC General Assembly House Bill 1465. Bottles are recycled back into plastic bottles or other products, including carpet, lumber, and even clothing. Recycling plastic bottles conserves energy and resources and creates jobs; more than 14,000 people are employed in the recycling industry in North Carolina. Aluminum cans have been under a landfill ban since 1994.
