ART-221 Survey Western Art: Ancient-Early Renaissance (3 credit hours) A survey of the history of western architecture, sculpture, and painting from circa 2400 B.C. to 1500 A.D. In addition to examining art within its historical context and exploring human cultural diversity, students will gain fundamental skills of visual analysis, acquiring the vocabulary and concepts needed to discuss works of art orally and in writing.
ART-222 Survey Western Art: High Renaissance-Modern (3 credit hours) A survey of the history of western architecture, sculpture, and painting from circa 1450 to the post-modern present. In addition to examining art within its historical context and exploring human cultural diversity, students will gain fundamental skills of visual analysis, acquiring the vocabulary and concepts needed to discuss works of art orally and in writing.
ART-251 Printmaking I (3 credit hours)
An introduction to basic concepts and techniques of printmaking.
The students will be challenged to think conceptually, as well
as demonstrate their knowledge of the elements and principles of
design. Studio fee assessed. Prerequisites: ART-101 and ART-110.
ART-351 Printmaking II (3 credit hours)
An in-depth examination of mixed media processes and how contemporary
artists are using them. This may include a variety of processes,
engraving, pronto plates, aquatints, dry-point and monotype. May be
repeated for credit with permission from the instructor. Studio fee assessed.
Prerequisites: ART-101, ART-110, and ART-251.
ART-946-A The Art and Culture of Weaving (3 credit hours)
An introduction to the techniques and history of weaving. Students will learn mechanics and operation of a floor loom. There will be a focus on color, design and concept as students create one-of-a-kind textiles. The course also includes study of contemporary artists in weaving. Studio fee assessed.
ART-949-A Who Let the Dogs Out? Photographing for the Web (3 credit hours)
A 6-week summer hybrid course where students will create and prepare digital images for the Internet while volunteering as photographers for Wake County Animal Shelter in Raleigh, NC. The photographs students create in this course will be used to help get dogs, cats and rabbits adopted.
