Minutes of May 4, 1999 Meeting
The Enrollment Management Team met at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, May 4, 1999
with the following members present: Sharon Cannon, Sandra Close, Rebecca
Duncan, Gordon Folger, Mary Johnson, Sue Kearney, Carol Kercheval, Jeannie
Morelock, Allen Page, Philip Roof, and LaRose Spooner. The minutes of the
previous meeting were approved. LaRose extended special thanks to Sharon
for her contributions to the College and to the EMT as she prepares to
leave Meredith.
Admission reports were provided by Carol, Sandra and Mary. The numbers
of advance deposits received from accepted freshmen are strong, and there
was brief discussion of reasons why the College is enjoying such success
this year. Sandra indicated that out of 93 completed applications for the
23+ Program, 61 new students have pre-registered at this time. Mary
indicated that graduate numbers have not really changed since her last
report and spoke with the group concerning how the graduate school is
currently working with any male who requests application materials. The
Trustees will be looking into the question about men in the graduate
school as it addresses the strategic planning recommendations. Sue
Kearney provided an update on the enrollment outlook for Fall 1999.
Pre-registration numbers are running ahead of approximately the same time
last year in both undergraduate and graduate sectors. The number of
entering freshmen anticipated should provide a record-breaking freshman
class next year. Careful attention is being given to identifying
appropriately located housing within the residence halls for these
students. The registrar has indicated that there will be a sufficient
number of faculty advisers to serve these students, and Allen indicated
that additional class sections will be added as needed.
Concerning advising, it was noted that Ann Gleason has provided training
sessions for academic advisers this spring and that she and Sandra are
holding a special workshop on working with at risk 23+ Program students.
Allen reported that a Summer School Task Force has been appointed by
Mr. Taylor. The members are Lyn Aubrecht, Ann Gleason, Martha Harrell,
Mary Johnson, Allen Page (chair), Sue Todd, Bill Wade, and Susan Wessels.
It was noted that the committee will need to make its report in September
if there is to be any significant change in the summer school program for
2000, as requests for the tentative listing of course offerings goes out
in October. The EMT members were requested to pass along any concerns and
suggestions about the summer school to Allen. Philip reported that a
larger number of students than usual are applying for financial aid for
the upcoming summer session, possibly because of the new policy that
requires the cancellation of registrations of students who do not pay
their tuition by three business days before their first class.
Sue reported that the Retention Strategies Work Group has accomplished
a great deal this year in collecting information about the programs,
activities and services in place on campus that seek to serve enrolled
students, and it has begun the process of making recommendations for new
strategies that could help with retention. The work group has not
completed its work, however, and will continue during the summer months.
The group will have a written report to bring to the EMT in the fall
semester.
LaRose requested the members of the EMT to provide a report to her of
what they and their offices have accomplished during the past year related
to building and retaining enrollment. The report can reflect new and
continuing efforts. LaRose will prepare a written report, which will
then be shared with Trustees, senior administration, and academic
department heads.
Sue Kearney led the group in a continuation of the discussion of
recommendations presented in Enrollment Planning: Report and
Recommendations. Another meeting will be scheduled to complete the
review and discussion of this document. The meeting was adjourned
at 11:00 a.m.
