Meredith College
Enrollment Management Team

Minutes of April 6, 2000 Meeting

The Enrollment Management Team met on April 6, 2000, at 9:00 a.m. with the following members present: Ruth Ann Balla, Celeste Brogdon, Sandra Close, Lori Duke, Gordon Folger, Ann Gleason, Mary Johnson, Sue Kearney, Carol Kercheval, Jeannie Morelock, and LaRose Spooner. Also attending as a representative from the financial aid office was Betty Harper.

LaRose opened the meeting by discussing the upcoming inauguration of President Hartford and the various events taking place on April 14 and 15. Such an occasion has great potential for attracting publicity for the College, from both the media and the visitors to the campus. Jeannie indicated that the media has been receiving information and is being encouraged to provide good coverage of the inaugural activities.

Minutes of the meeting held on March 2nd were distributed and will be presented for action at the next meeting of the EMT. Sue reported on a requested changed in the wording of the minutes of January 6th in the section on Web development. The revision was approved and will be posted on the EMT web site.

Ruth Ann reported on the project that has been approved for Fall 2000, which will provide a laptop computer for entering Honors Program participants and Teaching Fellows. The students will receive instruction in the use of computers for both curricular and co-curricular areas. Among other strategies, there will be special seminars and special FYE sections. The students are expected to assist the College with the development of the program for 2001-02, when all entering freshman will be required to have/use laptop computers. Two faculty forums have been planned for this week to discuss what faculty members’goals are for these programs.

Carol, Sandra and Mary presented application reports for the various admission programs. In response to questions raised, Mary clarified that Meredith has placed a “hold” on admissions to the M.H.A. program until such time as a graduate market analysis can be conducted, that the M.S. degree program in Nutrition expects to enroll about 20 students and will accept its first students for admission in Fall 2001, and that thus far only one male has enrolled in the graduate programs.

Ann then presented information about the current housing picture. At this point the numbers of continuing students who have signed housing contracts are below projections, and the numbers of students approved for off-campus housing are at an all-time high. Some of the issues that the housing office is dealing with are the increasing demand for non-smoking residence areas and the strong desire of students to be housed with other members of their class. The housing office has plans to call students who have not made a commitment for next year and others who might prefer to reside on campus if housing could be provided that would allow them to live with their classmates. Sue suggested that students who are on leave of absence until Fall 2000 also need to be sent housing information if they have not already received a packet. Sue also indicated that the lower number of continuing students who have signed housing contracts places in jeopardy the likelihood of realizing the on-campus enrollment that was anticipated when budgeting was done last fall/winter. Her office is monitoring carefully the housing numbers of both continuing and new students and will keep the College informed of the enrollment outlook.

As a result of its discussion of the housing issues, the EMT asked Ann Gleason to bring for consideration at its next meeting a recommendation for making all campus housing smoke free.

LaRose reminded the group that the next meeting of the Enrollment Management Team is scheduled for May 3rd. The meeting was then adjourned.
