Meredith College
Enrollment Management Team

Minutes of March 2, 2000 Meeting

The Enrollment Management Team met on March 2, 2000, at 9:00 - 10:30 a.m. Present for the meeting were Celeste Brogdon, Sandra Close, Lori Duke, Rebecca Duncan, Gordon Folger, Ann Gleason, Sue Kearney, Carol Kercheval, Jeannie Morelock, and LaRose Spooner. Dr. Rosalind Reichard was a special guest for the meeting.

LaRose introduced Dr. Reichard and asked her to talk about her involvement in recruitment and retention at Elon College. Dr. Reichard presented helpful information about the format of scholarship days, the nature of various learning communities and special programs, the option of spring orientation and registration programs, and the development of departmental recruitment plans, among other things. She indicated her desire and expectation to be involved in recruitment and retention efforts at Meredith. Dr. Reichard also indicated her wish to examine the number of adjunct faculty who teach freshmen at Meredith.

The minutes of the previous meeting were approved, and Sue presented official enrollment information for Spring 2000. LaRose then reminded the EMT of the information sessions on student characteristics that Sue and Ann will be providing on March 6th for faculty and staff. Sue indicated that she will present the characteristics and expectations of Generation Y, that Ann will provide data from the recent CIRP freshman survey, and that they will then address the issue of the challenges these students present to the College. Suggestions were made to have retention statistics available and to anticipate that faculty may be interested in discussing grade inflation and other issues that arose at the February 18th faculty meeting.

Rebecca spoke about the discussion on academic excellence that occurred at the recent faculty meeting. She noted a number of connections between the substance of that discussion and the concerns of the EMT. It was clarified that the faculty affairs committee had compiled the information sheet which was distributed. Rebecca shared her thoughts on the need for relevant and rigorous academic standards, on the importance of technology and the helpfulness of on-line discussions among her class members, on the need to be informed of what employers expect of our graduates, and on the helpfulness of internships for job and career preparation. She also commented on the study patterns of many students and on the consumer orientation of numerous students and parents.

Sue reported that she and LaRose had enjoyed productive luncheon meetings with the heads of academic departments, where recommendations of the Retention Strategies Work Group were presented. All but two of the department heads were able to participate in the discussions.

The meeting was adjourned. The next meeting is scheduled for April 6, 2000.
