Minutes of October 6, 1998 Meeting
The EMT met at 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday, October 6, 1998. Present for the
meeting were Sharon Cannon, Sandra Close, Rebecca Duncan, Gordon Folger,
Sue Kearney, Carol Kercheval, Allen Page, Philip Roof, and LaRose Spooner,
Chair.
Sue Kearney presented a brief report on the enrollment, which appeared
to be 2,613 on October 1. (NOTE: The final official count is 2,612, as
some corrections still needed to be made in the file.)
LaRose Spooner reported on actions taken at the Trustee meeting, which
included approval of the longevity bonuses for faculty and staff and of
the purchase of Colleague administrative software from Datatel. Other
news from the Trustee meeting included the acceptance of the I2000 report
and the election of Dr. Jeff Hockaday as the new chair and Dr. Charles
Sanders as the new vice-chair of the Board. Allen Page reported that the
golf tournament sponsored by the Board of Associates gave Meredith good
exposure in the business community and raised a significant amount of money
for scholarships.
Ruth Ann Balla provided a report to be given in her absence that a steering
committee for the computer project will be announced shortly and that a
planing meeting is scheduled for October 28 - 29. About 30 people will be
invited to the planning meeting -- the steering committee, the Senior
Management Team, and significant others. Ruth Ann also indicated that
the admissions office is testing an on-line inquiry form that is available
from ApplyYourself through a link to the Meredith web pages.
Sue Kearney led the EMT in a discussion of the report and recommendations
that were submitted to the Executive Vice President in May 1998 by the
Multicultural Recruitment Work Group. EMT had initially received the
report at its meeting on July 2 and had referred the report to the
Strategic Planning Review Team on July 15th. Now that the I2000 plan
has been presented to the Trustees, and given the fact that it includes
recommendations pertaining to greater inclusiveness, it is appropriate
for the EMT to determine what recommendations it wishes to make to the
Executive Vice President. The initial discussion centered around the
importance of institutional commitment, from the top down, to fostering
a multicultural environment and the reasons why seeking diversity in the
Meredith community is important. It was agreed that further discussion
of the report will be on the agenda of the next meeting.
Gordon Folger presented a written report and recommendations from the SWAT
Team on Experiential Learning. The report was received as information
that the members will review; action on the recommendations was deferred
until the next meeting.
Sharon Cannon distributed a report that reflects reasons given for
withdrawal from the College during the spring and summer. The number
of withdrawal forms received was higher this year than in the past, due
to increased effort on the part of the student development staff, and
especially residence directors, to make contact with those known or thought
to be leaving. We now have withdrawal summaries for six semesters, and Sue
Kearney's office will be setting up this data in a spread sheet to see if
trends and patterns can be detected that might help in our future planning
and programming.
Carol Kercheval circulated a report that shows the other institutions to
which Meredith's enrolled freshmen had applied. Twenty-eight of the 240
respondents applied only to Meredith. The institutions with which Meredith
most frequently crossed applications were NCSU (64), UNC-CH (59), ECU (56),
UNC-W (47), UNC-G (29) Elon (26), and Appalachian (24).
Sue Kearney reported one correction to the minutes of the meeting on
August 25th, which affected the wording of a recommendation. The EMT
accepted the correction and the recommendation will be sent to the SMT.
Sue also reported on the development of a web site for the EMT, which she
hopes will go on-line next week. She asked for any further suggestions
about contents and encouraged members to contribute information to be posted
to the site for the benefit of the Meredith community.
It was discovered that a number of EMT members have problems with the
next meeting date (November 10). LaRose Spooner will communicate with
the group to re-schedule the meeting for a more convenient time.
