Meredith College
Enrollment Management Team

OCTOBER 12, 2000

The Enrollment Management Team (EMT) met from 9:00 – 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, October 12th. The following members attended: Celeste Brogdon, Sandra Close, Lori Duke, Gordon Folger, Ann Gleason, Sue Kearney, Carol Kercheval, and Jeannie Morelock. Sue chaired the meeting in the absence of the chair, LaRose Spooner.

The minutes of the previous meeting were approved and follow-up comments were made by several EMT members. Sandra reported on her conversation with Sue Todd, Registrar, concerning drop/add procedures. (An outline of some problem areas identified is attached to the official minutes.) Sue Todd agreed that there are difficulties with the current system, some of which she anticipates that Datatel will help relieve in the future. Meanwhile, she has sent a stack of drop/add slips to each adviser and is hopeful that next year much of the checking of rolls, spaces available, etc. can be done through e-mail. Carol reported on efforts of the admissions staff to maximize the 23+ Program enrollment for the spring term. These include visits to many local businesses, information sessions, follow-up communication by e-mail when possible, changes to the web site, and a new application packet for the 23+ Program. Ann indicated that her office is seeing no further fall out where housing is concerned and that articles about the Honor Council will go into The Herald. She also reported on the well-attended Student Life Forum and on the Napster Forum that is planned.

Sue distributed several official enrollment reports (copies attached to the official minutes) and commented briefly on the enrollment outcomes. She reported that applications for Spring 2001 are down in all camps but that freshman applications for Fall 2001 are off to a good start. Concerning trends and developments, Carol indicated that admission counselors are hearing lots of interest expressed in science. She also said that they are seeing many minority students but that the problem in the past has been converting that interest into enrolling students. Ann informed the group about the Leadershape Program that will be offered in Spring 2001 for currently enrolled students. Sue reported that the Pricing Study conducted by George Dehne & Associates, Inc. is now completed and that the Senior Management Team is discussing what to recommend for tuition for the coming year. If the increase should be a large one, projecting enrollment for Fall 2001 will be more difficult and there will be greater challenges in both recruitment and retention.

The EMT next discussed the "Money Walk" project that the members completed during the past few weeks. Reactions to the project were very positive, with several members indicating they had had eye-opening experiences. Overall the project was deemed both interesting and productive. The various teams provided brief oral reports on their findings and filed written reports. The latter will be reviewed by LaRose, Jeannie and Sue, with some attempt to be made at identifying what appear to be priority needs. The EMT made the following recommendations:

  • That the SMT also conduct a money walk, with the suggestion that the Trustees would also find this activity useful;
  • That the "Money Walk" report of the EMT be sent to the consultant who will be conducting a facilities study;
  • That the residence halls receive some priority in the facilities update plan, since the College receives complaints (especially from parents) about these areas;

It was noted that the facilities study to be conducted by a consultant will examine plans for the future and current facilities use, including what is over- and under-utilized. The members stated that the College must recognize that it cannot raise costs and expect the facilities needs to not be addressed/corrected.

Sue reminded the group that it still needs to determine what theme would serve the College well for tying experience and service together for both students and for staff. Her suggestions thus far include "It’s Highly Personalized," "High Expectations," It’s All About Excellence," and "Simply Stated: The Best." She asked the group to think of other themes and to come to the next meeting prepared to decide on a unifying theme.

Sue led the group in a discussion of the next steps that it should take related to increasing diversity and inclusiveness on the campus. In light of the increased support from key administrators for this area, the EMT needs to be sure that it does not overlook opportunities or allow momentum to decline. Sue encouraged EMT members to participate whenever possible, in the Campus Week of Dialogue on Race (copy of program attached to official minutes) and in the one-day conference to be held at NCSU, "A Room Full of Sisters: Weaving Our Lives," for which Meredith is one of the sponsors. Sue distributed a copy of the final report of the Multicultural Recruitment Work Group Recommendations, which included all of the responses received. (A copy of the report is attached to the official minutes.) She requested the EMT members to review this document carefully before the next meeting and to identify those areas that still need attention. Some time needs to be devoted to determining what the next steps should be for ensuring that multicultural recruitment needs are being addressed. Sue also gave the group information about demographic trends that clearly shows the growth expected in the coming years in the percentages of students of color.

The meeting was adjourned.
