Helping Students in Academic Difficulty

Probation and Suspension Policies

I am having trouble concentrating. I can't seem to find the time to get everything done. My grades are slipping. I've studied and studied but I don't seem to do well on tests or papers. I just don't understand what the professor wants!

If you are hearing these statements from your advisees, you may want to refer them for help. The following campus resources can provide assistance:

Office of Academic Advising - provides workshops and individualized advice for study skills, including time management, test taking, note taking, effective reading, stress management, etc. Coordinates the Early Warning System to identify and track academically at-risk students.

Learning Center - One-on-one tutoring in writing, grammar, Spanish, French, mathematics, biology and speech writing. Additional help is available for GRE and PRAXIS preparation. Jones 122.

Counseling Center - Offers counseling in all academic, social, and emotional areas, including test anxiety and stress management. The Counseling Center also coordinates services for students with disabilities, including initial screening of learning disabilities and referral to testing services if applicable. Carroll Hall.

Early Warning System
The offices of Academic Advising and Dean of Students work with faculty to assist academically at-risk students through the Early Warning System.

How it works:

  1. Faculty may contact our office at 760-8521 or through earlywarning@meredith.edu to inform us of students who may be in trouble regarding class absences, low test grades or missed homework assignments.
  2. We contact the faculty advisor, Residence Hall staff and/or Director of Commuter Life and Diversity Programs to alert and offer assistance.
  3. Students are then contacted and offered assistance or referrals based on the individual situation.
