Sophie Lanneau Women's Leadership Program
Sophie Lanneau was one of the “Immortal Ten,” Meredith College’s first graduating class in 1902, and first president of the Meredith College Alumnae Association. In 1907 when she was 26 years old, Sophie received her missionary appointment to China, where she became the founder and principal of the Wei Ling Girls’ Academy. She envisioned the school as a means of imparting a Christian view of life to the Chinese, educating Chinese girls and upgrading the position of women in China. This leadership program honors Sophie Lanneau’s passion to serve both God and humanity; her dedication, vision, involvement and inspiration as a leader; and her commitment to Meredith College, the community and the world. Sophie Lanneau serves as a role model to inspire Meredith students to be effective leaders and active participants in their communities throughout the world.
