elcome our new Adjunct faculty member who is also a graduate of Meredith!
Robin Gary '08 who is currently a graduate student in Sociology at UNC-Chapel Hill will be teaching SOC 230B Principles of Sociology. Robin graduated from Meredith with a major in Sociology and earned the Zingraff Academic Excellence in Sociology award that year. Her office will be in Joyner 201 B, her phone number there is (919) 760-8701 and her email is garyr@meredith.edu.

Students present at the Southern Sociological Society Meeting in Historic New Orleans.
Karie Hudgins, Heather Losee, Ashley Hancock, Shelly Brigman and Mada Brown presented on their research at the annual Southern Sociological Society meeting in New Orleans, LA in March 2012. Dr. Hess a
nd Dr. Brown both attended and presented as well. In the picture on the right, you see Dr. Hess with the students as they waited for the airplane. Kris York attended the conference with the other students.

In April 2013 The Southern Sociology Society Meeting will be held in Atlanta, GA. Interested students who would like to attend should contact Dr. Brown or Dr. Hess. Senior students will be encouraged to present on their research for the SOC 496 course but all students may attend. Some financial assistance from the college may be available.

Dr. Bernadette Barton, author of Stripped: Inside the Lives of Exotic Dancers and Pray Away the Gay: The Extraordinary Lives of Bible Belt Gayscame to Meredith College in April 2011 and spoke twice on each of her books and meet with majors and members of Spectrum for dinner. Dr. Barton is a Sociology faculty member at Georgetown University in Kentucky and her book on exotic dancers was the Sociology book of the year in 2010-11. Dr. Barton was an exceptional speaker, giving warm and encouraging advice and support for students. The funding for her talks was from the Merdith College Diversity Council, the Convocation Committee and the Religious and Ethical Studies Program's endowment.
Inductions for Alpha Kappa Delta, The International Honor Society for Sociology 
Spring 2012 inductions were held at NCSU and four Meredith Students were inducted. They were: Quinn Kemp (Simmons), Jennifer Smith, Kimberly Gray and Kelsey Fitchett. The event was held at NCSU in the Sociology department center. Meredith College and NCSU hold this induction together to honor new inductees and for students and their families to hear a speaker who is a sociologist discuss some of his or her current research.
