Definitions of Service-Learning Currently Employed at Meredith
As gathered from conversations with faculty and staff and the service-learning survey that was distributed at the beginning of November, the definition of service-learning is determined by one of the following components. Service-learning is:
Community service alone: 6
Community service & reflection: 5
Community service that is tied to academic content: 4
Community service that is tied to academic content & includes reflection: 5
Community service that is tied to community need: 1
Community service that is tied to community need & includes reflection: 1
Community service that is tied to community need, academic content, and includes reflection: 4
Professional preparation: 3
Engagement in goal-oriented activities: 1
No definition provided: 4
As seen above, there is no cohesive definition of service-learning currently being employed. The Service-Learning Advisory Committee (SLAC) is attempting to align these definitions under the broad rubric of civic engagement so that we can encourage creativity and individuality while standardizing distinctions among the many forms of learning through service and student development.
