Umbrella: Civic Engagement
Civic engagement is thoughtfully organized interactions that create a partnership between higher education and the community for the purposes of enhancing student learning, fostering civic responsibility, and positively impacting the broader community. Civic engagement at Meredith College incorporates the following: experiential learning, service-learning, volunteerism, and leadership development.
Specifics:
Experiential Learning: Some kind of engagement with the community within an academic course, campus activity or leadership development opportunity that utilizes structured reflection.
Service-Learning:
"Service Learning is a credit-bearing, educational experience in which students participate in an organized service activity that meets identified community needs & reflect on the service activity in such a way as to gain further understanding of course content, a broader appreciation of the discipline, & an enhanced sense of civic responsibility." Volunteerism:
Community service without reflection.
Leadership Development: Leadership development opportunities such as LeaderShape or experiences that are cultural or diverse.
