Rationale
Civic engagement is fundamental to the health and sustenance of our societies. Therefore, service learning is key to the relevancy of our curriculum and the relevancy of higher education as a contributor to the public good. Since academic learning is the
focus of an undergraduate education, service-learning is primarily the responsibility of our faculty. Therefore, we are forming the Service Learning Advisory Committee as a part of the academic affairs committee structure to promote and sustain our service-learning program.

The
Service-Learning Advisory Committee reports to the Vice President for Academic Affairs,
Dr. Rosalind Reichard.
Committee Charge
The Service-Learning Advisory Committee is charged to review the current status of service learning initiatives at Meredith College and to recommend actions that will sustain and increase its impact on our learning community. More specifically, the work of this committee should include the following:
-
Provide overall guidance and support for
SL-designated courses that are part of the General
Education Program. Define and set criteria of SL designated courses. Make recommendations on ways to sustain current and promote new SL-designated courses. Review proposed SL-designated courses for potential approval.
-
Prepare a white paper or booklet (communication piece) on service learning at Meredith College which includes information on SL courses but is more expansive and inclusive of other service learning initiatives on campus.
-
Develop additional strategies for supporting faculty development efforts and showcasing service learning initiatives.
-
Review the infrastructure, budget, and resources available to service learning and make recommendations for the future.
-
Develop a plan for assessing the goals of Merediths service-learning program. Include a process for the routine collection of relevant data.
