Purpose
The
purpose of the South Eastern African American Student Leadership
Conference (SEAASLC) is to develop and strengthen the leadership
abilities and skills of African American students across the
southeastern United States. In the past few years the conference
has expanded to incorporate all students.
The conference incorporates African American history, morals
and values, leadership skills, self-improvement techniques,
community involvement, and unity to inspire and motivate African
American collegians and high school students to be more productive
leaders today and tomorrow.
Through this conference participants take the initiative to
educate themselves, focus on their futures, and address the
issues and problems within their communities by proposing
solutions. The conference includes many workshops, social
events, and dynamic speakers aimed at promoting leadership,
self-awareness, and addressing current issues of concern with
African Americans and world communities.
Conference History
The Black Student Leadership Network of the University of
North Carolina at Wilmington recognized the need for an arena
in which African American students in North Carolina could
address their problems and concerns. Thus, they founded and
implemented the first annual North Carolina African American
Student Leadership Conference in February 1993. The initial
support for the conference came from a grant from the Z. Smith
Reynolds Foundation. It is now supported through conference
fees and the host institution.
To
meet the high demand from students throughout the southeastern
arena of the United States, the conference changed its name
in 1996. Thus, the North Carolina African American Student
Leadership Conference (NCAASLC) became the South Eastern African
American Student Leadership Conference (SEAASLC). Through
a change in name and greater participation, this conference
has continued to fulfill its legacy of leadership that has
made it a successful vehicle for both the African American
community and its students.
SEAASLC is held on the first weekend of February, uniting
students, faculty, staff, and nationally renowned speakers.
A number of creative and informative workshops focusing on
leadership, among other topics, are presented during the conference.
SEAASLC is dedicated to guiding African American students
to be more productive leaders of today, and history makers
of tomorrow.
At each conference, distinguished speakers articulate the
importance of minority leadership in society. They emphasize
the significance of culture, history, unity, and leadership
through their keynote speeches and performances.
