Religion and Philosophy Careers
Why Major in Religion?
It is a misconception that a degree in religion only prepares you for a career in a ministry.
Of course, a religion major or minor can help you pursue a church-related vocation, such as pastoral counseling or ministry, but many of our graduates have also gone on to pursue a wide variety of careers in a number of diverse fields.
Studying religion can:
- Broaden your understanding of yourself and the world around you.
- Help you gain a better understanding of your own religious beliefs in comparison with other beliefs and traditions.
- Reveal the presence of religion in everything from politics to literature, current affairs to the entertainment industry.
- Allow you to make a thoughtful analysis of the increasingly pluralistic world around you.

Supplement the Major with Other Course Work
Religion as a second major or as a minor is also a great complement to other majors offered at Meredith College.
Some examples:
- Combined with a major in Social Work or Psychology, you will be able to approach your clients and patients with a solid grounding in religious differences.
- Combined with an English or Communication major, a minor or major in Religion can help you enter the many branches of journalism with a better understanding of the world that you’re covering and give you an advantage during major religious events such as the election of a new pope.
- Combined with a History or Political Science major, you will be better equipped to enter public policy positions in the public or non-profit sectors.
Why Earn a Minor in Philosophy?
The Department of Religion and Philosophy offers an 18 credit minor in philosophy. By studying philosophy you can:
- increase your ability to see the world from other perspectives.
- sharpen your research skills
- analyze concepts, arguments, and complex problems and organize the information efficiently
- present well constructed arguments
- strengthen your skills in interpretive, persuasive and descriptive writing.
Philosophy can open the door to many professional fields, including law, business, non-profits, education and journalism.
