We are seeking 13.5 credits for attorneys and paralegals from the North Carolina State Bar for each of these courses.
Criminal Law and Process I
Four classes, Tuesdays, March 11, 18, 25, April 1, 6–9:30 p.m.
Instructors: Samantha Kilpatrick and Ned Mangum
Learn what’s involved in representing individuals accused of a crime, representing the state or assisting victims of crimes. Gain a basic understanding of the processes and procedures involved in criminal law at the state level. Overview resources available to individuals whose lives intersect with the criminal justice system. Course pack provided.

How to Read (and Not Write) Legalese (CEL 1413)
Four classes, Tuesdays, February 5, 12, 19, 26, 6–9:30 pm

If you're drowning in a sea of "hereinbelows" and "parties of the first part," you need this course. After a brief review of basic rules of grammar, you learn and practice techniques for interpreting and improving the turgid writing too often found in statutes, contracts and elsewhere. Demonstrate clear and concise writing by completing a drafting assignment. Book Required: Plain English for Lawyers by Richard C. Wydick, 6th Edition, Carolina Academic Press. Available in the Meredith Supply Store.

Learn the nuts and bolts of interviewing friendly and hostile parties in a lawsuit, as well as investigation methods and techniques. Course pack provided.

Uniform Commercial Code I (CEL 1411)
Four classes, Tuesdays, March 11, 18, 25, April 1, 6–9:30 p.m.

Receive an overview of contracts for the sale of goods with emphasis on applicable provisions of the Uniform Commercial Code and current product liability law. This course builds on the basic understanding of contract and commercial law obtained from the Legal Survey course. Book to be purchased.
