The Meredith College calendar is filled with traditions, dinners, dances and events. Here you will find a brief explanation of each Meredith College tradition listed by the year in which a student experiences the tradition. We hope that these descriptions and quotes will give you a glimpse into the world of Meredith College traditions!
Freshman Year:
Fire & Water Dinner – Fire & Water is a year-end event for the freshman class in which they gather as a group to celebrate their wonderful experiences and new friends and let go of their bad memories.
“After reflecting on my freshman year of college with all of my classmates, we walked out into the courtyard and were serenaded by our big sisters. This was one of my favorite college moments because I could feel the love of the Meredith sisterhood.” - Katie Riggs, ’14
Sophomore Year:
Guardian Angel Dance – Students honor their fathers, grandfathers or brothers at this dinner-dance event. Usually held off campus, students and their dates enjoy dinner together and dance the night away.
“This event was such a great ‘thank you’ for my dad. We had a great time with all of the other fathers and daughters as well. They all had a wonderful evening getting to know one another.” - Britt Tatum, ’10
Charming Evening – During each student’s sophomore year she receives a charm. On the charm is engraved ‘Meredith College’ or ‘MC’ as well as the class year. In a special dinner ceremony, the class members are given their charms to be worn on either a necklace or bracelet.
“Charming Evening was a rite of passage, a step closer to getting my coveted onyx. It was almost as if I was officially a Meredith Angel and not just another college student.” – Chloe Williams, ’13
Tea for Two - The spring equivalent to Guardian Angel Dance, Tea for Two is held in honor of mothers, grandmothers and motherly figures. The students take their guests to a special tea and spend some time reflecting on their relationship.
“Tea for Two was a fun day that I was lucky enough to share with my mom. It was so special to me because it gave me the opportunity to bond with my mom and the rest of my class”- Marianna Blizzard, ’13
Class Day - The lil’ sis class constructs and displays two large daisy chains and sings as the senior class processes into Meredith’s amphitheater through the chains. The sophomore and alumnae sister classes sing traditional songs to the seniors. At the conclusion of Class Day, the chains are moved to the island and placed down in the shape of the senior’s class numerals.
“Class Day was a magical experience; like many Meredith traditions, ‘you just have to experience it’. It was a beautiful day, and I wouldn't trade it for anything”. - Anna Barefoot, ’13
Junior Year:
Ring Dinner - As a junior, Meredith students have the opportunity to participate in one of Meredith’s most unique traditions: Ring Dinner. This is a special night during the fall of a class’ junior year in which they celebrate and receive their own Meredith College onyxes.
"Ring Dinner, for me, was more than just receiving a black onyx ring. It was celebrating the honor to be recognized amongst past, present and future Meredith women. I wear my ring everyday to remind myself of my Meredith experience as it symbolizes the sisterhood that I gained from such a special place." – Kristin Fowler, '11
12th Night – This newer event was created in order to mark ‘x’ number of days until graduation. For example, the class of 2012 will celebrate 12th night and the class of 2015 will celebrate 15th night.
“There was a whole lot of laughing... and some crying too. We looked back on our traditions and memories together while looking forward to all that is to come.” – Halie Sue Smith, ’11
Campus Wide Traditions:
Cornhuskin’ – Cornhuskin', commonly referred to as Meredith’s homecoming, is one of our campus’ most beloved traditions. A mix of competitive events take place in McIver Amphitheater on the first Friday of November. Additional events are scheduled throughout the week leading up to the main event on Friday night. Those events include a big sis/lil’ sis bonfire, a scavenger hunt, the President’s Raid, hall raids and Friday afternoon’s parade.
“In my time at Meredith College, I have made Cornhuskin' my favorite tradition of all time. I can dance, laugh, be creative and bond with all of my classmates in just a few short months. Most of my college memories and best friends have been made through this awesome experience!” – Mary Kathryn Howard, ’12

Alice in Wonderland - Every four years the Meredith faculty and staff perform their own version of “Alice in Wonderland” for the students. The next performance is scheduled for January 2012.
“Alice is one of Meredith’s most beloved and secretive traditions. What a treat to see our professors dressed up and playing the part of the characters of Alice in Wonderland! The best part is trying to figure out which professor is playing what characters…”– Harriett Kinney, ’10
Stunt – Stunt is an annual class competition that takes place in the spring of each year. Points are awarded for each event and are used in determining the overall winner of Stunt. Recent events in Stunt have included bat spin, tug of war, lip sync, balloon toss, limbo, egg toss, sponge toss and a three-legged race. It is often thought of as Meredith’s version of field day.
"I love seeing everyone come out to either participate in the field day events or cheer their classes on in the lip sync. Stunt is such a fun way to spend the afternoon outdoors.” - Lorri Cole, ’14
