Understand the dangers presented by sexual predators. Learn to minimize your vulnerability to assaults. With lecture and hands-on training, the first half of each class will be spent in the classroom and the second in the gym. Learn to identify “rape drugs,” analyze potentially dangerous scenarios, and study several methods of verbal assertiveness. During the second half of class, learn basic self-defense techniques designed for women to use in emergency situations. Wear athletic clothing, tennis shoes, and minimize jewelry.

Audience: Those interested in beginning a meditation practice and deepening their spiritual awareness

Mindfulness meditation is a gift we can offer ourselves that also benefits others. Sometimes people think that meditation means sitting quietly alone and don’t see the connection between being mindful and the rest of their lives. During this day together there will be clear instruction and practice in mindfulness meditation, as well as discussion of how to effectively integrate mindfulness practice into the context of daily life. Is it possible to be present and balanced when confronted with the full catastrophe of living? This may include illness, death of a loved one, relocation, change in career, retirement or some other significant change or loss in our lives. The exercises in Thich Nhat Hanh’s book The Miracle of Mindfulness will be used as a guide to help participants be present with both important life issues and the most mundane daily activities.
