In our visual world, the illustrated page serves as an essential and creative link toward achieving excellent reading comprehension for all students. In this workshop, textile artist Peg Gignoux models the natural connections between the visual arts and language arts by guiding participants through the creation of an accordion pop-up book. After analyzing the work of today’s finest illustrators and considering how style and graphic intention evokes meaning in children’s stories, participants explore the expressive role of story illustrator. Using the visual tools of collage, participants create a multi page accordion book—each participant interpreting an original story created previously in one of Susie Wilde’s collaborative story writing workshops. Designed to promote meaningful connections for reading, skills in observation, visual literacy and reflection via an integrated arts project.

A new course for participants who want to focus on understanding reading in middle grade novels. This class offers hands-on experiences as the participants collaborate to analyze books in terms of both their styles and structures. Work collaboratively to talk about chapters of a book focusing first on structure elements (character, character traits, motivation, conflict and resolution) and then examine the author’s use of style elements (vivid verbs, description using
the senses, dialogue, similes).
