• The Crabtree Valley Mall location of Belk department store is sponsoring an "Educator’s Night" on Sunday, Nov. 10 from 6 – 9 p.m. Attendees will receive a 15% shopping discount off all regular, sale and clearance priced merchandise. The event is open to all educators, as well as school administrative and support staff, and their immediate families. • Meredith music faculty members Donna Jolly and Kent Lyman will perform Camille Saint-Saens’s "Carnival of the Animals" with the North Carolina Symphony on Saturday, Nov. 16 at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. The performance, which will be held in Meymandi Concert Hall at the BTI Center, is part of the Symphony’s Young Peoples’ Series. Tickets for the 1 p.m. show are still available through the NC Symphony’s box office: 919-733-2750.

Honor Roll


Dr. Rosalind Reichard, vice president for academic affairs, was recently quoted in an Associated Press article, "Colleges seeing a building boom for modern science facilities." The article was picked up by local and regional news outlets including The Charlotte Observer, News & Observer.com, and the Akron (Ohio) Beacon Journal.

• A total of 52 prospective students recently attended MBA information sessions, held in September and October. Prospects met professors, as well as current Meredith MBA students. The sessions attracted prospects that currently hold positions with Research Triangle area companies including GlaxoSmithKline, First Citizens Bank, Nortel Networks, SAS, Wachovia, and General Electric. Faculty and staff members who are interested in assisting with the next session should contact Lara Kinas, assistant director of graduate studies, ext. 8058.

• Assistant Professor of Politics Jim Piazza presented a paper titled "New World Disorder: Assessing the Economic Roots of Terrorism" at the International Studies Association Southern Region/International Security Studies Section Conference in Richmond, Va. on October 20. The paper is a first draft of the results from the research Amy Hobbs, ’02, and Piazza did this past summer as part of the Undergraduate Research Program. The research findings indicate that none of the socioeconomic measures of inequality or poverty are related to terrorism.

• Professor of Psychology Jack Huber has recently served as an expert guest on WPTF radio. On Oct. 23 Huber discussed psychology issues in the Washington D.C. area sniper attacks, and on Oct. 28 he discussed the issue of voter apathy.

• An interview with Kent Lyman, associate professor of music, will be featured on WCPE (89.7 FM) radio on Nov. 3. The interview topic was the Steinway Tour of Legendary Pianos, which will be on the Meredith campus Nov. 6-10.
