Meredith College Golf Classic, held November 5, attracted 214
playersthe largest num-ber in the events four-year
history. 
The 2001 Golf Classic, chaired by Curt Lee of Raleigh, raised
approxi-mately $55,000 for Meredith College scholarships. Awards
were presented to the top three teams on both the Meadows course
and the Highlands course.
Liz Taylor, of Cary, won a BMW for making a hole-in-one during
the Golf Classic
held at Prestonwood Country Club. Taylors hole-in-one
was witnessed by Kim Walker. Taylor and her team also won second
place on the Meadows course. Taylor and her husband Jim have
an endowed scholarship that supports study abroad at Meredith
College. Their daughter, Meredith, is a 1999 Meredith graduate.
Other players included Board of Trustees Chair Brad Wilson,
trustees Hope Connell and Michelle Rich, President Hartford,
Jay Hartford, Vice President for Student Devel-opment Jean Jackson
and faculty/staff members Melinda Campbell, Marie Chamblee,
Carol Brown, Harold West, and Marilyn Jones.
Gold sponsors of the tournament were BJLAS and Rodgers Builders,
CP&LA Progress Energy Company, Century Care Management,
Inc. and Jackson Mattress. Silver Sponsors were The Business

Sue Kearney, dean of enrollment planning and institutional
effectiveness, released Merediths official enrollment
statistics, based on the October 1 census file. Highlights
from the report are listed in the chart below:

The
report also indicated that Meredith enrolled 493 new traditionally
admitted students, 95 new 23+ Program students, 39 new graduate
and dietetic internship students, and 25 new post-baccalaureate
students.

BRINGS MEDIA TO CAMPUS

The
Meredith Technology Initiative, as well as several other campus
events and accomplishments, has attracted media attention.
On August 21, WTVD-TV 11 aired two stories describing Merediths
laptop program, one of which included interviews with students
who received laptops. WRAL-TV also aired a story about the
laptop program.
Meredith was included in an Associated Press story about the
U.S. News & World Report rankings, which appeared in several
regional newspapers. The College was also mentioned as one
of the Top 10 Best Universities in the News &
Observers and the Charlotte Observers articles
on the rankings.
WNCN-TV 17 and the News & Observer included information
on Merediths student-led fundraiser On Wings of
Hope. Meredith was also mentioned as one of only three
North Carolina institutions to offer Arabic courses in an
article and an editorial in the Greensboro News & Record.
Several radio networks and television stations covered Merediths
involvement with the Americans United Flag Run, including
CBS Radio, the North Carolina News Network, WTVD-TV 11, WRAL-TV
5, UNC-TV, WB22-TV, and Fox 50-TV.
Merediths Freedom Rides Convocation was featured on
the front page of the Sunday Arts & Entertainment
section of the News & Observer and in Spectator magazine.
The News & Observer gave Cathy Rodgers, assistant professor
of theatre, and Meredith Performs Theatre a positive review
for their production of Selkie. The News &
Observer also featured convocation speaker Galway Kinnell
on the front page of the Life, etc. section.
Several Meredith faculty members have also served as media
sources. James Piazza, assistant professor of political science,
was quoted in an Associated Press story titled, N.C.
Colleges see new interest in Middle East. Diane Ellis,
professor of human environmental services, served as a source
for a News & Observer article about the post-September
11 trend of wearing red, white & blue clothing.
