Nutshell Notes
• M. Tony Bledsoe attended the International Applied Business Research Conference held in Las Vegas, Nevada, where he presented a paper entitled “Diversity Management: Seeking Validation” co-authored by Becky Oatsvall (Meredith College) and David Condon (University of South Carolina). Additionally, he chaired two sessions and was recognized as one of three track chairs for the conference which had 344 participants from 42 countries and 193 educational institutions.
• Meredith student Katie Holden earned first place with her mother and grandmother in the Rachel Carson Sense of Wonder 2009 poetry contest. Their entry, “Place of Peace,” won the intergenerational competition. Entries were required to be from a team of two or more persons, including a young person and an older person. The creative work expressed the "Sense of Wonder" that each team feels for nature. The contest is in honor of environmental activist Rachel Carson, author of “Silent Spring.”
• Jennifer Schum, associate director, 23+ and transfer advising, is an annual program reviewer for conference proposals to the annual conference of NASPA (National Association of Student Personnel Administrators) and ACPA (American College Personnel Association. Schum serves on the research committee of SACSA (Southern Association for College Student Affairs). She writes research/assessment tips that are published in the monthly online newsletter, SACSA-lert, and sponsor/select the recipient of the annual research grant. She is a doctoral candidate for a Ph.D. in College Student Personnel at the University of Louisville.
• Angela Shores, assistant director, academic advising, was elected to serve on the American College Counseling Association (ACCA) Executive Council as Member at Large for a three year term, 2008-2011. She coordinates the Emerging Leader grant program. Shores was featured in the national Counseling Today magazine "My Life, My Story" column in April 2009, and is a co-author of the seventh edition of the counseling services contextual statement within the Council for the Advancement of Standards in Higher Education (CAS) 2009 standards.
• Dana Sumner, associate director, employer relations, is president-elect of the NC Association of Colleges and Employers. She also chaired the Research Grant Committee for the Southern Association of Colleges and Employers.
• Amy Losordo, assistant director, career development, is membership chair of the NC Career Development Association.
• Candice Fisher, assistant director, advising and first year experience, is in the final stages of completing her dissertation and earning an Ed.D. in higher education administration from NC State University.
• LeNelle Patrick, senior academic advisor, is the treasurer and membership chair for the North Carolina Adult Education Association.
