New Program Helps Develop the Total Student Athlete
In keeping with its mission to provide student athletes with the opportunity to achieve academic, athletic and personal excellence, the Meredith athletics department is developing a leadership program for student athletes.
The effort is known as the NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills program. The program is a total development program for student-athletes and is supported through the promotional and financial efforts of the NCAA Leadership Advisory Board and the NCAA national office. Head softball coach Robert Luckadoo is leading the CHAMPS/Life Skills program at Meredith.
This fall, Luckadoo, Assistant Athletics Director/Sports Information Director Greg Jarvis and Assistant Athletics Coordinator David Zinn participated in an NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills Workshop in Charlotte, N.C. Following this training session, Meredith held its first CHAMPS/Life Skills event on October 21. Luckadoo provided the freshman student athletes with tips on registering for classes, talking with their academic advisors and achieving academic success at Meredith.
As part of an additional leadership opportunity, Jarvis took two student athletes, Olivia Izza, who plays softball, and tennis player Ashley Pearsall to the NCAA Division III Student Leadership Conference in Dallas, Texas. The conference provides the tools required to enhance their personal development and leadership skills to positively affect their campus, conference and communities in the future.
