Meredith Team Earns Second Place in HR Games

The Meredith College Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) chapter placed second in the Southeast Regional HR Games, held on April 19, 2008. First place went to Virginia Commonwealth University.

The Regional HR Games was held in Knoxville, Tenn., and hosted 18 teams from colleges and universities throughout the Southeast.

Meredith’s Team Onyx competed against teams from NC State University, Peace College, the University of Tennesee, Liberty University, Murray State University and Johnson Wales University. The team consisted of seniors Emily Hedrick, Ginny Nobling and Sandra Selimovic.

Meredith College fielded three teams in this year’s competition. All three teams placed in the top 12 in the Southeast. Other team members were seniors Misa Woodberry, Victoria Tuttle, Regina Holmes, freshman Ashley Stein and juniors Anne Frazier Elliott and Megan Phillips.

The HR Games is a student competition that promotes certification and the human resource profession. The questions for the matches are divided into categories similar to those used in the Professional in Human Resources (PHR) certification exam (i.e., Management Practices; Selection and Recruitment; Training and Development; Compensation and Benefits; Employee/Labor Relations; and Health, Safety and Security).

Meredith Participates in Model Arab League
By Melyssa Allen

Meredith College recently sent a student delegation to the Southeast University Model Arab League.

This is the first time a team from Meredith has participated in the Model Arab League, which was held March 14-16, 2008, at Converse College, in Spartanburg, S.C.

Meredith participants were Emily King, Tiffany Durand, Amanda Chartier, Lindsey Cooke, Jee-In Hur, Danielle Beck and Laura Hart. The students are members of Meredith’s Model United Nations team.

The Meredith team represented the Federal Islamic Republic of the Comoros, which is an island nation located in the Indian Ocean between Madagascar and Mozambique.

“It was a challenge representing a country that is currently struggling with a lot of political turmoil,” said King, who is Meredith’s Model UN team president.

King was the Comorian delegate to the Joint Defense Council, which discussed topics including the possibility of a nuclear Iran. King received the Chair’s Commendation Award for her work. The award is given to the delegate who best portrayed his or her country.

Meredith’s Model UN advisor is Jeff Martinson, assistant professor of political science.

Meredith Names Student Employee of the Year

Stefanie Bradshaw, ’08, has been named Meredith College’s Student Employee of the Year. The award was presented to Bradshaw during an April 16 reception held as part of National Student Employment Week.

In the nomination, Bradshaw’s supervisor said, “She has been a role model to the other student employees, interns, parents we serve, and her supervisor. She understands and practices the philosophies we practice in our department. She can explain to an intern or another caregiver why we do the things we do. She knows how to effectively treat people with respect while utilizing positive guidance and self-help skills.”

As the Student Employee of the Year, Bradshaw received a $100 prize and lunch out with her supervisor. Her name will also be listed on a plaque that will be displayed on campus.

The reception honored all Meredith student employees. There were 494 students working on campus in 72 departments during the spring 2008 semester.

The Student Employment Program at Meredith College provides valuable experience to students both inside and outside of their field of study. Students who work part-time while in school not only gain work experience but help contribute to the cost of their education and reduce their loan indebtedness.

The Office of Financial Assistance and the Meredith Career Center worked together to provide events for Student Employment Week. In addition to sponsoring workshops on a variety of employment-related areas, the Office of Financial Assistance encouraged campus offices to find ways to celebrate student employees throughout the week.
