In a Nutshell

Reliving the Past, Building the Future
By Erin Hege '04

The excitement for the 2004 Alumnae Reunion Weekend has already begun around campus and among Meredith's alumnae. Over 400 alumnae will be coming home to Meredith on May 14-16 for a time of celebration of all alumnae and in particular the reunion classes.

Reunion weekendAssistant Director of Parent and Alumnae Relations Hilary Allen, '01, has been integral in planning Alumnae Weekend.

She said, "Reunion Weekend provides alumnae with the opportunity to reunite with old friends, reminisce about their college days and catch up on current happenings at Meredith."

The schedule for the weekend has something special for every alumna. The classes of 1954 and 1979 will be celebrating their golden and silver anniversaries with a special luncheon on Saturday for each class.

On Friday, William Price, Kenan professor of history, will lead a presentation titled, "The Fifties: America's Most Important Decade?". That afternoon the Alumnae House will host a tea in celebration of the class of 1954, during which members will be inducted into the Golden Oaks Society.

Alumnae will be able to reminisce with former and current professors on Saturday morning with a breakfast in Belk Dining Hall. After breakfast, President Maureen Hartford will deliver her State of the College address in Jones Auditorium, updating alumnae on the College's status and sharing her vision for Meredith's future.

Vice President of Student Development Jean Jackson, '75, will guide alumnae through the newly renovated Faircloth Residence Hall while Vice President of Academic Affairs Rosalind Reichard and members of Meredith's science and math departments will lead tours through the Science and Mathematics Building.

Meredith faculty members Dr. Janet Nelson, Dr. Rose Lippard, Dr. Rebecca Duncan, Dr. Carrie Cokely and Dr. Susan Fisher will speak to alumnae about ways in which ethics will be integrated into the new general education curriculum in their program "Ethics Across the Curriculum Initiative."

Alumnae Association President Deborah Dove Smith, '80, will preside over the Alumnae Weekend Meeting on Saturday.

She said, "I am immensely proud to preside over the 2004 Alumnae Reunion Weekend. I never stop learning from my alumnae sisterhood."

Together faculty, faculty emeriti and staff will collaborate on programs and lectures that will bring alive the alumnae's past at Meredith while discussing Meredith's present and future. Everyone, especially alumnae, is guaranteed to enjoy the programs, the class reunions and the vision for Meredith's future.

"I expect the wonderful camaraderie and the abiding sense of hope and history that is unique to the Meredith College Alumnae Reunion Weekend," Dove said. "Whenever Meredith women are joined for a common theme; be it fundraising, policy making or a landmark reunion, one will always find amazing power and love for the institution. That love crosses all boundaries and classes."

More than 200 students participated in some way, including presenting research projects, performing in arts showcases, and sharing information on leadership, study abroad or service learning projects.

The majority of the day focused on research presentations. Topics of sessions ranged from "Intimate Environments and Personal Effects" and "Remembering, Learning and Literacy," to "Symbolism and Motivation on the Human Stage."
