Graduate School Presents First Martin Marietta Scholarships

Five graduate students at Meredith College's School of Education have been awarded Martin Marietta Scholarships.

Martin Marietta Scholarships

The five students are

* Harriet B. Thomas, general music teacher and choral director at Terrell Lane Middle School and Louisburg High School; she is working toward her M.Ed. in Reading. She has been a teacher for 17 years.

* Linda Schaars Barnes, instructor of developmental English and developmental reading at Vance Granville Community College--Franklin Campus in Louisburg; she is working toward her M.Ed. with a specialty in Reading. She has been a teacher for 12 years.

* Kristi Triplett Arriaga, ESL teacher at Reedy Creek Elementary School; she is working toward her M.Ed. with a specialty in English as a Second Language. She has taught for four years.

* Susan Paige Stanley Pearson, English teacher at Apex High School; she is working toward her M.Ed. with a specialty in English as a Second Language. She has taught for five years.

* Nicole Lee Trueheart, third grade teacher at Cary Elementary School; she is working toward her M.Ed. with a specialty in Reading. She has taught for seven years.

Meredith College also awards Martin Marietta scholarships to teacher assistants who are admitted to its undergraduate program to become licensed teachers, or to women who are 23 years of age or older who have not completed a degree and have returned to Meredith to do so, to prepare to be a teacher.

President Maureen Hartford will serve on the Board of Visitors for the Marine Corps University through September 2007. As a member of the board, Hartford will advise the commanding general of the Marine Corps Combat Development Command and the president of the Marine Corps University in education, doctrinal, budgetary, enrollment and research polices and programs. The mission of the Marine Corps University, which consists of eight institutions, including the Marine Corps War College, is to develop, implement and monitor the resident and distance learning professional military education policies and programs for all Marines, regular and reserve.

• Resident Assistants Neph Bailey, Laura Bates, Megan Coleman, April Ford, Dana Keck, Elizabeth Loftis, Sarah Owen, Kelly Rhodes and Shannon Stegall represented Meredith at the North Carolina Association of Residence Halls conference. The team received three awards - Best Display, Best Flag and a Top Five Program Award.

Jim Piazza, assistant professor of politics, served as a source for WPTF Radio's coverage of Senator John Edwards' presidential campaign. Piazza was asked to discuss Edwards' surprise close second showing in the February 17 Wisconsin primary.

Jim Pearce has been named the new head of the Convocation Committee. Pearce is an associate professor of English.

Doug Spero, assistant professor of communication, was quoted in an article titled "How low can we go?" in the February 29 issue of The News & Observer. The article explored controversial aspects of current pop culture. Spero was also a source for another article, which discussed whether or not NBC's "The Apprentice" has educational value. This article, titled "'Apprentice' offers workplace hints," also ran in the February 29 issue.

• A team of Meredith faculty members consisting of Assistant Professor of Art Carol Hayes, Assistant Professor of Human Environmental Services Patsy Pierce and Dean of Special Academic Affairs Alyson Colwell-Waber attended an NC Campus Compact Faculty Development Institute on Service Learning. More than 60 faculty and staff members from 21 colleges and universities attended the event, held in Charlotte February 4-6. Service learning is a teaching method that integrates community service into course content for enhanced student learning.

Hilary Allen will serve as the acting director of alumnae and parent relations while Catherine Rideout is on maternity leave. Institutional Advancement also welcomes Laura Jasper, alumnae and parent relations assistant and Pamela Mullins, gift records coordinator.

Andrea Weaver will serve as the acting director of marketing and communications while Kristi Eaves-McLennan is on maternity leave. Leesha Austin, '02, will also be working part-time in the marketing office this semester.
