MEREDITH COMMUNITY
MEMBERS RECEIVE AWARDS |
Two
members of Merediths staff have recently received awards
for excellence in their fields.
Bill Cox, director of financial assistance at Meredith College,
was awarded the Eleanor S. Morris Distinguished Service Award
from the North Carolina Association of Student Financial Aid
Administrators (NCASFAA).
The Eleanor S. Morris Distinguished Service Award is the highest
award given by the NCASFAA. The award is presented to an individual
who has made an important contribution to the association or
to the profession. Cox has been Merediths director of
financial assistance since 2000.
Jones
Auditorium Manager Bill Brown recently received the 2001 Raleigh
Medal of Arts Award for extraordinary achievement in the arts.
Brown was the sole recipient of the award. As Jones Auditorium
manager, he supports lighting and sound design for the dance,
music and theatre departments. A member of the Meredith staff
for more than five years, he also teaches box office, publicity
and lighting, sound, stage and house management classes.
The Medal of Arts Award, presented by the City of Raleigh Arts
Commission, recognizes an individual or organization that has
made an extraordinary contribution to the arts through service
and/or financial support.
Brown also teaches technical theatre at Enloe High School for
the Performing Arts. He has toured internationally with the
African American Dance Ensemble, nationally with the Acting
Company and regionally with the North Carolina Shakespeare Festival
and the Nebraska Theatre Caravan. In addition, Brown serves
as president of Arts Access, an organization that helps make
the arts accessible to people with disabilities.
Meredith College received the Medal of Arts Award in 1999. |

he
Summer Reading Program committee recently announced Icebound:
A Doctors Incredible Battle for Survival at the South
Pole, by Dr. Jerri Nielsen, as its Summer Reading Program
selection for 2002.
The book documents the true story of Nielsen, a medical doctor
who was working at the South Pole when she discovered she
had breast cancer. She was unable to leave the continent to
get medical treatment, so she was forced to treat herself
until she could be rescued.
Chrissie Bumgardner, co-chair of the committee, called Nielsens
story "a remarkable journey."
Bumgardner said the committee chose this book to coincide
with next years campus-wide theme, "The Human Face
of the Sciences." This theme was chosen to celebrate
the opening of the new Science and Mathematics building in
2003.
"We're excited about our choice and encourage all members
of the Meredith community to take part in the summer reading,"
she said.
Nielsen will be coming to Meredith to speak at the opening
convocation on August 26. She is one of several scientists
who are on the 2002-03 convocation schedule.
For more information, see the convocation web site at www.meredith.edu/enews/convocat.htm.
