COMMITTEE ANNOUNCES SUMMER READING PROGRAM SELECTION

By Christy Sadler, ’03

The Summer Reading Program committee recently announced Icebound: A Doctor’s Incredible Battle for Survival at the South Pole, by Dr. Jerri Nielsen, as its Summer Reading Program selection for 2002.

The book documents the true story of Nielsen, a medical doctor who was working at the South Pole when she discovered she had breast cancer. She was unable to leave the continent to get medical treatment, so she was forced to treat herself until she could be rescued.

Chrissie Bumgardner, co-chair of the committee, called Nielsen’s story "a remarkable journey."

Bumgardner said the committee chose this book to coincide with next year’s campus-wide theme, "The Human Face of the Sciences." This theme was chosen to celebrate the opening of the new Science and Mathematics building in 2003.

"We're excited about our choice and encourage all members of the Meredith community to take part in the summer reading," she said.

Nielsen will be coming to Meredith to speak at the opening convocation on August 26. She is one of several scientists who are on the 2002-03 convocation schedule.

For more information, see the convocation web site at www.meredith.edu/enews/convocat.htm.
