SUMMER BRINGS SPECIAL PROJECTS FOR MEREDITH FACULTY/ STAFF |

In between teaching summer school courses and planning for the
next academic year, Meredith faculty and staff members are completing
special projects, such as leading study abroad programs, coordinating
summer camps and conducting research this summer. In A Nutshell
will highlight some of these projects in each summer issue.
Ellen Goode, Martha Burpitt and Jane Crowley accompanied interior
design students to New York City for a study tour of design
firms, showrooms and museums. The trip took place May 15-19.
Jo Guglielmi, of the mathematics department, and Simone Tiu
will present a paper titled "Assessing a technology initiative:
Lessons learned while integrating technology into teaching and
learning" at the 42nd annual Association for Institutional
Research conference, June 2-5 in Toronto, Canada.
Tiu, who works in Enrollment Planning and Institutional Research,
said "This will be a great opportunity for us to share
with educators from other institutions what we have learned
while integrating technology into teaching and learning and
to promote Meredith to our colleagues."
Garry Walton, of the English department, is also a contributor
to the paper being presented by Tiu and Guglielmi. This summer,
Walton will work on a book manuscript about teaching Shakespeare
on film with rising senior Lori Anderson. This project is part
of the Undergraduate Research Program.
Other Meredith faculty will travel to China this summer. Bill
Schmidt, who teaches physics, and Georgia Schmidt, who teaches
Suzuki violin for the music department, will be in Dalian, China
to teach at the Dongbei University of Finance and Economics
as visiting professors.
Health and physical education faculty member Melinda Campbell
will conduct an in-service workshop for high school teachers
across the state regarding Curriculum and Assessment Models
for Secondary School Teaching on June 5-6.
Margaret Evans, of the music department, travels to Fort Worth,
Texas in June to coach one of her piano students who was chosen
to compete in the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition
for Outstanding Amateurs. While there, she will also study at
the Texas Christian University/Cliburn Institute, which features
internationally known faculty and concert artists and intensive
study of piano performance and literature.
Deborah Tippett, Susan Munroe Fisher and Jody Roubanis will
also be in Texas this summer. They will be speaking at the annual
meeting of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences
in Dallas in June about the human environmental sciences departments
service learning initiatives.
Walda Powell, of the chemistry department, and Larry Grimes,
of the biology department, will lead a Science Camp for middle
school girls on the Meredith campus June 3-7 and June 10-14.
Grimes and Powell will also work with Governors School
East as science instructors. |

NEW
PHONE SYSTEM TO BE INSTALLED ON CAMPUS THIS SUMMER
eredith
College recently signed an agreement with Sprint to implement
a new campus-wide phone system.
The new Cisco AVVID system, transmits data and voice over the
same network, which will increase efficiency and allow for increased
growth.
Steve Parrott, a North Carolina Sprint state executive, says
the new system will give Meredith a "platform that provides
tremendous flexibility and will allow the College to easily
implement new technology and applications in the future."
Some of the benefits and advanced features of the Cisco system
are:
Name and number caller identification
;
Two-way speakerphone (in most models)
;
Increased extension mobility, which makes it easier for
technicians to add, move or change extensions
;
A campus directory that is accessible by phone
; and
The capability to access a list of missed, received and
placed calls.
According
to Ginny Kemp, Merediths phone system manager, the Cisco
system was chosen for many reasons.
"There is a significant cost saving advantage since new
buildings can be equipped with a single drop per station for
phone and PC. The system is scalable and can easily grow to
10,000 phones," Kemp said.
"The Cisco solution requires only one fiber connection
to remote buildings and allows us to retire much of our deteriorating
copper infrastructure," she added.
Dan Williams, interim chief technology officer, expects the
project to be completed this summer. "The Office of Technology
Services has begun the process of implementing the new phone
system with final deployment scheduled for late July. Progress
of the installation and key dates will be communicated via
Meredith E-news and e-mail services,"
he said.
According to Sprint and Cisco, Meredith is the first college
in North Carolina to implement this type of system across
its entire campus.
