NUTSHELL NOTES


• A staff information session will be held Aug. 8, from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. in Kresge Auditorium. The session will include brief comments from members of the Senior Management Team concerning important changes that have taken place in their areas over the summer, followed by a question/answer session.

• Twenty-eight high school women from North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia attended "Looking Toward College," July 11-14. This residential seminar is designed to allow high school students to explore college. Dean of Students Ann Gleason directs the program, which is in its 24th year.

Manley Midgett, adjunct instructor of education, was awarded the National Service Award by the National Science Olympiad at this year’s competition held at the University of Delaware. Midgett is North Carolina’s state science Olympiad director and has volunteered with this organization for 15 years to help improve math, science and technology education across the state. The N.C. Science Olympiad works with about 300 public and private schools each year. Midgett also serves as the national event leader for Mission Possible, an event that involves thousands of schools across the country.

Janice Swab, professor of biology, won first place in her age group in the 2002 Triangle Race for the Cure.

• NBC-17 featured Meredith Grounds Manager Harry Cadman in a story about how the drought is affecting area colleges and universities. The story ran Wednesday, July 17, during the 6 p.m. newscast
