DECEMBER COMMENCEMENT
CommencementDecember Commencement — Members of the platform party gathered with President Maureen Hartford and the commencement speaker, Raleigh Chief of Police Jane Perlov, prior to the December 15 commencement ceremony.

In her address, Perlov offered graduates a tool kit for leadership success, which included a strong education; a willingness to take risks; self-confidence; loyalty; personal courage; a generally optimistic attitude; and "the ability to celebrate your successes and those of others."

A total of 138 bachelor’s degrees and 29 master’s degrees were awarded to students who completed graduation requirements in the summer or fall of 2001.

MEREDITH COLLEGE WINS CASE
DISTRICT III AWARDS

Acorn
Meredith College has received two awards from the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) in district competition.

CASE is the professional organization for advancement professionals who work in alumni relations, communications, and development. District III includes colleges and universities in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia.

Traditions and Transitions
, Meredith’s 1999-2000 Annual Report was awarded a "Grand Award," the highest award in the category. Written by English department faculty member Suzanne Britt, Traditions and Transitions chronicled President Hartford’s first year in office. The Office of Marketing and Communications designed and edited the publication.

Other institutions competing in this category included the University of South Carolina, the University of Georgia, and the University of Virginia School of Medicine. CASE judges evaluated the technical quality of the publication, including writing and design.

The Office of Marketing and Communications won a CASE (District III) Award of Excellence for the media relations efforts resulting in coverage of Meredith's technology and math/science initiatives.

The entry, which was selected from a total of 20 entries, included news releases, tip sheets, media advisories, descriptions of media relations tactics used and copies of all of the news stories that resulted.

The award-winning Meredith College entries will be on display at the next CASE conference in Atlanta, Feb. 3-6.
