STAFF-SPONSORED BOOK DRIVE SUCCESSFUL
Book Drive PicThe children's book drive sponsored by the Staff Affairs Committee collected more than 160 new books for the children of Raleigh's Tuttle Community Center Daycare.

The book drive exceeded its goal to collect one book for each of the 97 children who attend the Tuttle daycare. Staff members delivered the books on December 19.

"On behalf of the Staff Affairs committee, I would like to thank the members of the Meredith College community for their support of the holiday book drive," said Staff Affairs Committee member Betsy Stewart. "I am pleased that Meredith was able to provide at least one book for each of the children."

While the book drive was created as a staff holiday project, faculty members and students also contributed books to the cause. The book drive was chosen in support of Meredith's Literacy Initiative.

Prior to delivery, stickers reading "this book belongs to" were placed in each book and the child's name was written in as the books were distributed.

The book drive was supported by Quail Ridge Books, which gave a 15 percent discount toward the purchase of children's books for this cause.

NPR’s MORNING EDITION HOST TO SPEAK AT FOUNDER'S DAY CONVOCATION

acornBob Edwards, host of National Public Radio’s Morning Edition, will serve as speaker for Meredith’s Founder’s Day convocation, February 18 at 10 a.m. in Jones Auditorium.

Founder’s Day has been an annual tradition at Meredith College since 1909. It is an opportunity for the campus community to celebrate its founders and its history. Following the convocation program, a wreath will be placed at the marker honoring Thomas Meredith.

While the Founder’s Day speaker has traditionally been someone with strong connections to Meredith College, Edwards was invited this year in order to address current events such as the U.S.’s war against terrorism and the effects of the September 11 terrorist attacks.

Edwards has hosted Morning Edition since its premiere in November 1979. A daily newsmagazine, Morning Edition is the most-listened-to program in public radio, boasting 8.9 million listeners each week. As host of Morning Edition, Edwards conducts more than 800 interviews each year covering politics, international affairs, education, labor, economics, sports, the arts, and entertainment.
